The death of a customs officer at a hospital was blamed on the “negligence” of the hospital authorities. The officer, Mr. Ravi Raj, superintendent of customs, was posted at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. He died of a heart attack late Saturday at a private hospital in Navi Mumbai. His relatives and friends alleged negligence on the part of the hospital, stating that the authorities had given him CPR treatment two hours late.

His wife complained that no “qualified” doctor was available when the patient reached the hospital. The staff said that she informed the medical staff that her husband had a pre-existing heart condition that needed urgent treatment. But the officer did not get immediate treatment. On the contrary, the medical staff assured them he was normal and had nothing to worry about. She accused that while they kept waiting for about 2 hours, the doctors reached at 5:30 AM and started CPR. After 3 hours of suffering in unnecessary pain and agony, no doctor attended to the officer, which eventually resulted in his demise.

An accidental death report has been filed, and the case may be referred to the medical board, which will call on whether it was negligence or not, and based on their report, action will be taken.
